Teachers regularly monitor and assess student’s knowledge, understanding and application of learning throughout all units of work, including using Pre and Post Assessment tasks. Teachers use a range of diagnostic assessment tools to track individuals’ progress in literacy and numeracy so that they can best support each student with their learning needs.
The testing and assessment program at Yeronga State School includes:
diagnostic testing at the beginning of each year for all children
assessment for oral language and metalinguistics for our prep students
assessment tasks to cover each of the curriculum areas for the units covered during the year
all prep students enrolling in the school undertake a short test to give additional information on their level of development.
Prep year
Prep students’ progress is recorded on an early learning record. A folio of work and achievements forms part. Teachers will offer two interviews a year to have more in depth discussions about your child’s progress.
Throughout the year, prep students add work samples and achievements into their folio which creates a record of the year’s learning.
Academic reporting
Formal assessment of units of work is conducted regularly and parents receive two written report cards each year in addition to parent/teacher interviews at least twice per year. Parents are always welcome to approach teachers for more regular progress updates. Making an appointment via email, telephone or in person will ensure that a suitable time for both parents and teachers is established.
National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment of all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia. NAPLAN is made up of 4 tests in the areas of;
• Reading
• Writing
• Language conventions (Spelling, grammar and punctuation)
• Numeracy
NAPLAN tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed through all subject areas in the curriculum across time.

ICAS Tests
The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) are independent skills-based assessments with a competition element. ICAS is unique, being the most comprehensive generally available suite of academic assessments and school tests for primary and secondary school students.
ICAS tests are offered to Year 2-6 students and occur throughout Term 2 and 3. Parents pay a fee for each ICAS test. Written reports and certificates are sent by UNSW once marking is complete.
ICAS tests are run during school time throughout the year at dates designated by the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

Information is sent home during Term 1 each year, advising parents how to participate.
