In
1871, the Boggo School was opened on 6th February with 63 foundation
pupils. Fifteen years later in 1886, the
school was renamed Yeronga State School.
Over the years student numbers have fluctuated with a historical high of
1600 students in 1958. As we approach
our 150th anniversary, more than 25 000 children and their families
have been touched in some way by Yeronga State School.
In
1893, Yeronga State School offered relief to families that had lost their homes
in the Great Brisbane flood. This strong
community connection was replicated in 2011 when once again the school was a
refuge for families suffering the devastating effects of floods.
Over
the years, Yeronga State School has been at the forefront of educational innovation:
·
Dedicated music room opened in 1958
·
Opening of pre-school centre for deaf
children in O’Loan Street in 1958
·
1964 saw the building of the first
stand-alone school library in Queensland
·
During the 1970’s, Yeronga employed the first
full time teacher librarian in a primary school in Queensland
·
Study of Spanish and German in the late
1980’s
Yeronga
State School also has a strong tradition of sporting and cultural pursuits:
·
In 1922, the school had its own sporting war
cry and participated in the first inter-school sporting competitions
·
A school choir with 50 members was
established in 1935
·
Tennis courts were built in 1958
·
School sporting houses were introduced in
1963

In
2021, Yeronga State School will commemorate our 150th
anniversary. This sesquicentennial year
will be an opportunity for past students, families and staff to come together
to celebrate and reminisce about school days, friendships and “do you remember
when….”
In
preparation for the anniversary, the school archivist would be interested to
speak with any alumni who might be willing to donate school memorabilia or
would like to register his/her interest in being involved with our 150th
anniversary in 2021.
